Planning considerations
Consider mature plant size, sun exposure, sightlines and walking routes. Rock reflects and holds heat, so do not assume a rock yard is cool. Review drainage and separate planting needs from areas meant for gathering.
Material choices
Rock size, shape and color change both appearance and how the surface feels underfoot. Boulders create focal points but need suitable access and placement. Select plants for the actual exposure and water needs, not just their appearance at installation.
Preparation before the finish
Remove unwanted materials as included in the scope, plan grades and edging and review irrigation for the selected plants. Weed barrier choices should consider planting areas and drainage; barriers cannot permanently eliminate weeds.
Care and upkeep
Remove weeds and windblown debris, maintain plants and check irrigation. Rock may need redistribution or replenishment over time. Newly installed plants need an establishment care plan even when they are suited to the desert.
What affects the cost
Rock volume, hauling, boulder size, plant selection, removal, access and irrigation changes affect price. Material delivery and placement can be significant parts of the work.
